Through 130 paintings from overseas lands produced when photography did not exist and when travel to such places was reserved to an elite, this exhibition underlines the evolution of the Western perception of distant populations, societies and territories. Featuring works by famous painters like Matisse and Gauguin as well as by much lesser known ones, it shows artists first succumbed to the temptation of exoticism where colour and light fuels dream of luxurious and exotic worlds before becoming closer to reality and taking up an almost documentary approach.
