One of the craziest and most festive carnivals in Europe, the Carnaval de Dunkerque is also one of the longest as it runs over several months with events on weekends and certain weekdays. It features balls and processions of groups of revelers and musicians called “bandes” who are dressed up or wear yellow fishermen's coats, as the tradition dates back to the 17th century when ship owners held a feast for the fishermen and their families before the men departed for six months to fish off the coast of Iceland. The parades last around 4 hours and finish at the Town Hall where the crowds demand 'what they deserve', that is 450 kg of herrings which are traditionally thrown off the belfry. The party culminates in the “Trois Joyeuses”, on the Sunday, Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday.
